Ontology is a philosophical discipline that has gained great popularity in the area of informatics, thanks to the outburst of communications via web. Ontology in fact allows to:

• identify the relevant information in a specific context
• filter the irrelevant information
• define the fundamental concepts that represent a context
• specify how the relevant pieces of information are related to each other

With ontology however, it is possible to design a shared interpretation of the content to the extent of eliminating nearly all the irrelevant information from the traditional search engines.
